Styling Caroline’s Curly Hair

Happy Memorial Day!

In my last post I asked you guys if you wanted to see a tutorial on styling Caroline’s hair, or Clara on the beam, and Caroline’s hair tutorial was outnumbered two to one, so here it is!

This is a method that I like to use, and it’s kind of unique from most; I really like it, though. I like how it looks more natural.

 

You Will Need…

• A doll hair pick (A doll hairbrush works, too)
• Recommended: A small spray bottle with water
• Optional: A (clean, used only for doll hair) toothbrush

• And, of course, your doll with curly hair!

Start with a (very) small piece of hair. Spritz it with a little water to dampen it, but make sure to protect your doll’s eyes.

Twist it/finger curl it (to the left, or whichever way your doll’s hair naturally curls)…

all the way down, until you have a small curl at the bottom.

Then you can let it go. Note: After this picture, I fixed this piece, because I like for the hairs to stay together, unlike in the picture.

Now for a little more in depth show of how I finger curl. Normally I would used my other hand to hold the curl/help it along as I go, but my other hand was occupied with the camera.

In these pictures you can (hopefully) see how I twist the hair around my finger (to the left, or natural direction! 😉 ) .

And then, silly me didn’t take a picture of how this specific curl turned out, but I guess you can use the first curl I did for reference.

Then continue spritzing and curling all of your doll’s hair, piece by piece. It might take a bit to get the hang of how to make your curls, but play around with it, and you should be able to start developing a good way to twist and curl the pieces.

Here is a picture half of the hair uncurled and half curled (The uncurled side had been lightly combed out, previously). When I get about halfway around her head, I like to start again near her face on the other side.

And here it is, all curled! But we’re not done quite yet! We still have some finishing touches!

One finishing touch, is to smooth out the hair on the top of her head, that, by now, is probably kind of clumped and messy.

To smooth this up, hold down the hair where my thumb is, pressing on her head. Then pull out your (clean) toothbrush, and carefully brush the top of her hair to smooth it out. Your hand is holding down to protect the curls, so they don’t get snagged by the toothbrush.

Ta-da! Note: I didn’t come up with this smoothing method, but I’ve seen it in a few videos on YouTube.

 

Another finishing touch, is to go back and twist a few of the pieces the “wrong way” (to the right). I like to do that with this curling method, to add variation so that the little curls aren’t all in the same direction. Some pieces curl the other way easier than others.

And lastly, you sit back and admire your doll’s lovely, curly hair! This whole styling process took me about 40 minutes, by the way.

One more note, this style probably isn’t the best for heavy play, as it could get messy easier than other methods for curling, and take a while to redo. But this style would be great for a photoshoot, lightly used doll, or even lighter/careful play! 🙂
