The next day, Grace and Caroline hurried off to the Pet Shop, excited for their plans.

“Welcome to The Precious Pet Shoppe!” Grace and Caroline were greeted by the smiling face of a young, blonde-haired store assistant. “How may I help you?”

“I was hoping to look at your canaries,” Caroline responded anxiously.

“Ah, yes, the canaries! Right this way!” The store worker led them to the glass cage where the canaries were kept, rattling off facts about them as they went.

“I suppose I’ll leave you to meet the birds. I’ll be just around the corner. Holler when you’ve picked one of these lovelies, and I’ll come get it for you!”

It didn’t take Caroline long to decide. An adorable little yellow one seemed to be looking right at her. The bird whistled a lovely tune.

“That one,” Caroline whispered, gesturing to the pretty bird.

Grace smiled at her decision, “We’ve decided!!!” she hollered (just as the lady asked her to).

“What a wonderful bird! I’ll get her for you straight away!” She carefully picked up the bird and they headed back to the front counter.

“Now, honey, You’ve found your birdie, but now you’re going to need a cage for her.” The lady started pulling various cages from inside her counter and showing them to Caroline.

“That ones really pretty,” Grace commented when the store worker pulled out a mint-colored bird cage.

“I agree,” said Caroline. “We’ll take it.” She nodded towards the bird cage.

“Alright! Now before I hand this little girl over to you, you’ll have to sign these papers. Are you sure you’re ready to be a serious bird owner?”

Caroline didn’t hesitate, “Oh I sure am!”

When Caroline and Grace got home, they were hardly through the doorway when Julie and Clara came to see what they had gotten. Grace and Caroline had kept the purpose of their trip a secret, and Julie and Clara knew something was up, and were bursting to see what it was.

“A bird!” Clara exclaimed.

“She’s beautiful.” Julie breathed. They were all happy and content with the new members of their family.

And with that, the Thomas Family was complete… for now at least…
